Hi Keanu, where are you?
In Toronto, the city where I grew up. I was raised in the Yorkville district which is really high-end now, but when I was like this street kid, there were strip clubs and this great candy store/ head shop I used to go to called The Grab Bag.
When did you leave?
When I was 20. One of my first roles was an American TV movie shot here. I was the Canadian content they had to have so I got a lead role and a Hollywood agent.
And here you are 25 years later with your first producer’s credit for Henry’s Crime…
Yeah, I started a production company seven years ago and this is our first film. I wouldn’t say I’m reinventing myself but I want to develop stories to produce, whether I act in them of not.
Is it fair to call your Henry’s Crime character a dork?
Absolutely. James Caan even says to him, “You’re the nice dork who lives without a dream.”
You’ve been developing Passengers with director Gabriele Muccino. Is that next?
I hope so. It’s set in the future but it’s more a romance than a sci-fi movie. It’s about a guy who wakes up on a spaceship and thinks he’s going to die alone so he decides to wake up a woman.
How are your fighting skills these days?
I’m a really good movie fighter but it doesn’t translate to the real world. If they gave out black belts for movie fighting, I’m second dan. But in real life? I’m nothing.
Can you tell us if the rumours are true about a third Bill and Ted film?
We’re trying. Alex and I are still friends and we’re talking, and we’re talking to Chris [Matheson] and Ed [Solomon – writers]. I would love to play the role and I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again.
